While there are many browser based mafia games out there, FREE MAFIA GAME (FMG) has a funloving community that makes it rise to the top.
Rounds last a couple weeks, allowing new players to start out on an even footing with the veterans... for those who want an edge, credits can be purchased or earned. Also, ranking players and families earn them each round.
There are speed rounds on the weekends as well, allowing players to beat on each other while still honoring family alliances in the main game.
It is an easy game to learn and play, but with enough complexity and strategy to keep it exciting. The ability to view not only who is online but also what they are doing is one of my favorite features...see who is looking at whose profile or maybe catch someone who is collecting, or as they are attacking someone else and weakened.
Come check it out and see for yourself. It's not necessary to join a family, but it makes the game more fun...and it's nice to know someone has your back
